Pat Fierro has been drawing and painting most of her life. Born in a small Swedish town in Nebraska, her family moved to Lincoln when she was barely four. Her parents said she started writing and drawing when she was three. At that time she wrote backwards and upside down. They had to take a mirror to read it. She writes and paints left-handed but eats right-handed. Through the years this has been a detriment in trying to give directions to others. By the third grade Pat had created her own cartoon character, "Steve the Skunk", of which she wrote strips of his adventures. Her parents were most supportive of her talent and when she was ten they provided her with private lessons in tempera, oil color, and pastel. After high school she worked as a secretary in the Nebraska State Capital. During this time a family friend introduced her to a famous local artist, David Manrose. He liked Pat's work and took her on as a prodigy. David was an oil color impressionist and historical muralist. With his encouragement and teaching she trained in the painting to landscapes and murals. While teaching her unique techniques, he stressed the importance of the individual free spirit of the artist - to stay true to yourself and paint what "you" perceive not what others wanted you to perceive. To this day, she practices that principle. The joy and satisfaction of creating art is placed before marketing, shows and awards. Pat works in the mediums of watercolor, watercolor pencils, acrylic, oil, oil pastels and sometimes uses collage to enhance her work. She has a special fondness in painting art that represents musical figures showing an abundance of harmonious color and movement. To continue exploring other techniques, she has attended training classes with watercolorist Terry Madan and Linda Gunn ( portraits and collage). She has shown her art in a variety of shows in the South Bay area and is a member of numerous art associations. Pat's work is usually shown year round in the San Pedro Art Association Gallery in Ports O' Call.
